Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Tampa Owner’s Guide
Gelco chimney cap installation in Tampa typically runs $340 to $680 installed, depending on the cap size, flue tile dimensions, and whether we’re replacing a rusted-out bracket or starting with a bare flue. We stock Gelco-compatible caps and mounting hardware on our trucks, so most installs happen in a single visit. You usually find out your cap has failed the hard way: a rusted corner in the yard after a storm, a raccoon auditioning for a home renovation show in your flue, or water staining on the ceiling near the firebox. Cory Mitchell has pulled enough collapsed Gelco caps off Tampa chimneys to know one thing: the cap itself rarely fails quietly. The bracket gives way first, then the cap tilts, then Florida rain finishes the job.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco makes three main chimney cap lines we install and service across Tampa: the standard single-flue cap, the multi-flue cap for chimneys with two or more flue tiles side by side, and the top-mount cap that covers the entire chimney crown. The compatibility gotcha most homeowners hit is flue tile sizing. Gelco single-flue caps are sized to the outside dimensions of your flue tile, not the inside opening. A “13×13” cap fits a tile measuring 13 inches by 13 inches on the outside. Older Tampa homes, especially in Seminole Heights and Hyde Park, frequently have odd-sized clay tiles that don’t match any stock cap. In those cases, we order the correct Gelco size or, when the tile is discontinued, we fabricate a mounting bracket to spec. Hadley Chimney Tampa is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco, but we install their caps because the stainless steel holds up better in salt-adjacent air than galvanized alternatives. We also stock DuraFlex and HeatShield products for broader chimney work, but Gelco is our default for cap replacement.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust streaks running down the chimney chase or crown. Gelco’s stainless caps resist rust, but the mounting brackets on older installs were sometimes galvanized. Once the zinc coating fails, rust bleeds onto the masonry and the bracket loses structural bite.
- Water in the firebox after heavy rain. A tilted or shifted cap lets rain run straight down the flue. If you open the damper and find a puddle, the cap or its bond to the crown is compromised.
- Animal noise coming from the chimney. Raccoons and squirrels in Tampa don’t need much of a gap. A cap with a bent screen or a torn mesh panel is an open invitation.
- Sparks or embers landing on the roof when you burn. The spark arrestor mesh on a Gelco cap is designed to catch embers. When it rusts through or pulls loose from the frame, those embers hit your shingles.
- Visible tilt when you look at the chimney from the street. Walk out to the curb and look up. If the cap isn’t sitting level, the anchor screws or the bracket have started to fail. It will get worse with every storm front that pushes through Tampa Bay.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the honest Tampa pricing breakdown for Gelco cap installation, parts and labor together:
| Scope | Typical Installed Range |
|---|---|
| Single-flue Gelco cap, standard size | $340 – $460 |
| Oversized or non-standard flue tile | $460 – $560 |
| Multi-flue or top-mount cap | $520 – $680 |
| Custom bracket fabrication (rare) | Add $90 – $140 |
What drives the price is the cap footprint and whether the existing mounting points are sound. If the old bracket pulled loose and left cracked mortar at the crown, that gets patched as part of the install. Every quote includes the cap, stainless mounting hardware, crown sealing as needed, and a written price before anyone picks up a drill. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the install fails within a year, we come back and fix it free, no argument.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re comfortable on a ladder and just want to confirm the cap size, grab a tape measure and check the outside dimensions of your flue tile from a safe position on the roof. That’s useful information that speeds up the quote. But here’s what goes wrong when homeowners attempt the full swap: the old cap bolts are often seized with rust, and over-torquing them cracks the clay flue tile underneath. A cracked tile means the cap has nothing solid to anchor to, and now you’ve turned a $400 cap job into an $800 flue repair. Working on a roof edge in Tampa heat is also not where anyone wants to spend a Saturday. If you’d rather have it measured, priced, and installed by someone who’s done this more times than he can count, call (850) 790-3475 and we’ll set a time to come out.
FAQs
A Gelco stainless cap installed in Tampa typically lasts 10 to 15 years before the mesh or mounting hardware shows meaningful wear. The Florida variables are salt in the air near the bay, intense UV exposure, and summer storm cycles that flex the bracket every season. A galvanized bracket from an older install might only make it 5 to 7 years.
We can sometimes replace the spark arrestor mesh or straighten a bent mounting bracket if the frame is still solid. But once the bracket anchor points are rusted or the cap frame has warped from storm lift, repair money is better spent on a new cap. We’ll show you photos either way, and we won’t recommend a replacement you don’t need.
Most single-flue Gelco cap installations take 45 to 90 minutes from setup to cleanup. If the existing hardware is seized or the crown needs patching, allow up to two hours. You’ll get a live arrival window, so you know when we’re actually showing up.
Yes, we carry common Gelco single-flue and multi-flue cap sizes on the truck. Odd-sized flue tiles sometimes require a same-week order. We’ll tell you before anyone climbs a ladder whether it’s a same-visit install or a two-stop job. Call (850) 790-3475 for a free estimate.
