Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Sweep in Tampa: What to Know First
If you own a home in Tampa with a Gelco chimney cap, chase cover, or fireplace component, a proper sweep is about more than pushing a brush. We provide independent Gelco chimney sweep service across Tampa, typically completing a standard sweep and Level 1 inspection in about 45 – 60 minutes, with a written price handed over before any tools come off the truck. In Tampa, expect a standard chimney sweep to run $180 – $340 for a single flue, though homes with heavy creosote buildup or older Gelco caps that need removal can push the final number higher. You’ll know the exact figure before we start. If you’re seeing staining on a Gelco cap or flaking inside the firebox, call (850) 790-3475 and a live person will answer, day or night.
This page is for Gelco owners in Tampa who want a sweep that documents what’s actually happening inside their flue. We’re an independent Gelco service provider, not a manufacturer affiliate, so we tell you straight what’s worn, what can wait, and what the camera shows.
How Gelco Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
- Gelco chase covers corroding at the seams in Tampa’s coastal air. We see this most on the GC-series multi-flue chase covers, especially within a few miles of the bay. Tampa’s humidity plus warm afternoons means galvanized steel seams oxidize faster than in drier climates, and once water gets under the cover, it tracks into the flue. We remove the cover during the sweep, check the caulk bed and crown, clean the flue, and tell you honestly whether the cover can be resealed or needs replacement.
- Gelco deluxe caps with screen mesh trapping creosote in a ring. The finer mesh on Gelco’s deluxe line keeps animals out, but where a plain cap would pass particulates, that mesh collects creosote. In Tampa homes that fire a lot in December and January, we’re often chipping a creosote donut out from under the cap skirt. Our sweep includes removing the cap when accessible, cleaning the mesh separately, and photographing the liner before capping back.
- Older Gelco top-mount dampers binding from soot and rust. On 15-year and older Gelco dampers, the pivot arms collect soot and lock up mid-turn, making it impossible to fully close the flue in summer. The fix is usually a disassembly brush down plus graphite on the pivot, not a new damper. We’ll show you the photo before recommending a repair.
- Chase covers installed without weep holes pooling water. Some Gelco replacements were field-installed without proper drainage, and in Tampa’s rainy season, that means a pool of standing water that eats through the flashing over time. We check drainage paths during every sweep and note if a chase cover needs a retrofit or replacement, using OEM Gelco where available or a properly gauged aftermarket equivalent when the original line is discontinued.
- Fireplace-facing components discoloring from oversized fires. When a Gelco fireplace is run hotter than its rating, the visible face can warp slightly and creosote adheres to exposed steel in a way that doesn’t happen with properly sized fuel loads. The sweep clears it, but we’ll also mention the burn pattern in our photo report so you know the fires were burning too large, which is a switch from most companies that just clean and leave.

Our Gelco Chimney Sweep Process
- 1
Call (850) 790-3475. A live person answers, books the sweep, and gives you the arrival window. You get live tracking before the tech shows up.
- 2
Tech arrival and written price. Your background-checked, uniformed technician walks the chimney, checks the Gelco components, and hands you a written price before anyone picks up a brush. No verbal “should be about” lines.
- 3
Equipment setup and interior protection. Drop cloths, HEPA-filtered vacuum, and the proper brushes sized to your flue. We never use a one-size-fits-all round brush from the truck.
- 4
Creosote removal below the Gelco cap. We remove the cap when it’s safe and accessible, sweep the flue, and clean the cap’s screen separately so the mesh isn’t re-depositing debris into the flue.
- 5
Camera inspection and photo documentation. A small camera goes up the flue and sends images to a screen. Cory Mitchell has spent years running crews across Tampa and insists on showing homeowners exactly what’s inside their liner, since the photo tells the story better than any description.
- 6
Testing, guarantee, and digital invoice. We verify the damper opens and closes, check the cap is seated, and send your before-and-after photos with a link to pay. Every repair we make carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise with a free second visit if it fails.

What moves the price: how tall the roof access is, whether the Gelco cap needs to come off safely, and how many seasons of creosote have built up. Tampa’s damp winters mean some flues hold moisture and form thick, tar-like deposits that take longer to clear. Call (850) 790-3475 and we’ll give you an exact number before your appointment. Estimates are free.
Why Tampa Homeowners Call Hadley Chimney Tampa for Gelco Work
We’ve been doing this since 2003, and the rule that’s never changed is that you get a written price before work begins. Not an estimate you find out was optimistic, not a surprise line item once the brush is on the roof. If a repair is needed on a Gelco component and we do it, it’s backed by a written 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within a year, we return free and make it right. That’s our standing commitment, not a promo. Every visit includes The Relay Visibility Guarantee, so you get live arrival tracking, before-and-after photos, and a digital invoice. And while our techs know Gelco products inside out, they also work daily with DuraFlex liners and HeatShield repair compound, so if your chimney needs something beyond a sweep, we’re not guessing at parts. As part of the Relay Home Co. family and held to The Relay Standard, we answer the phone 24/7 with a real person. Call (850) 790-3475.
FAQs
No. A standard chimney sweep and Level 1 inspection does not void a Gelco product warranty. What voids warranties is using abrasive cleaning methods or non-approved chemicals on coated surfaces. We use brushes and rods sized to your flue, and we never pressure-wash or chemical-strip a Gelco cap. If we recommend a parts replacement, we’ll tell you whether OEM Gelco or a quality aftermarket equivalent makes sense so you’re never running a warranty risk without knowing it.
Once per year, at minimum, if you’re burning wood or a gas log set with frequent use. Tampa homes with occasional fireplace use (under 20 fires per season) can sometimes push to 18 months, but the humidity here means even cold-season fires leave creosote that absorbs moisture and turns sticky. If you’re renting the home or just purchased it, schedule a sweep before the first fire. Call (850) 790-3475 for a free estimate.
We carry common Gelco replacement parts and aftermarket equivalents on our trucks, so a loose cap, torn screen mesh, or minor chase cover caulk issue can often be handled the same visit. If your cap is part of a discontinued line and we need a special order, we’ll show you the photo of the damage and let you decide before any charge is made. Same-day repair isn’t always possible, but same-day diagnosis always is.
Not always. If the cap is seated properly and the flue is straight, we can sweep from below without touching it. But on homes in Tampa’s Hyde Park or Seminole Heights where the cap is older, removal lets us clean the screen mesh that’s trapped creosote and inspect the underside of the cap skirt. We only remove a cap when it’s safe and when it gives us a better view of your liner, and we’ll always show you the camera images afterward.
