Masonry repair

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Chimney Repair in Tampa: What to Know First
HeatShield chimney repair in Tampa typically runs $1,200 – $3,800 depending on the liner damage and how much of the flue needs treatment. Most HeatShield jobs we handle are completed in one visit, with the ceramic compound cured and ready for use within 24 – 48 hours. We’re an independent HeatShield service provider, which means we install and repair the product without manufacturer ties, and we give you a written price before any work starts. If you own a HeatShield liner or a chimney that was treated with HeatShield Cerfractory compound and you’re seeing spalling, cracking, or water entry, this page covers what’s actually going on, what it costs to fix, and how we approach the job. Call (850) 790-3475 to book an inspection, and we’ll show you photos of exactly what’s happening inside your flue.
How HeatShield Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
HeatShield is a ceramic repair compound applied to the inside of a flue to seal cracks, gaps, and deteriorating mortar joints. It works well when applied correctly, but it’s not a forever fix, and Tampa’s humidity plus salt air accelerates certain failure modes we see regularly. Here are the five most common HeatShield issues we repair across Tampa, from Hyde Park bungalows to newer builds in Westchase:
- Cerfractory delamination on original HeatShield applications. The original HeatShield Cerfractory Flue Sealant can separate from the flue wall when it was applied over creosote that wasn’t fully removed, or when moisture was present during curing. We see this often in Tampa homes where the chimney sat unused for years before treatment. The fix is mechanical removal of the loose sections, surface prep, and reapplication. The symptom homeowners notice first is a sandy grit falling into the firebox. That’s not normal wear, it’s failed bond.
- Joint cracking at the flue tile offsets. HeatShield’s joint repair system, HeatShield Joint Repair, uses a specialized mortar to seal the gaps between clay flue tiles. Those tile offsets are the most common failure points in any masonry chimney, and in Tampa, thermal cycling between AC-cooled interiors and 90-degree exterior walls stresses those joints harder than in cooler climates. When we open the flue with a camera, joint failure shows up as visible gaps between tiles, often with smoke staining behind them. We clean out the compromised joint and repack it before reapplying HeatShield.
- Water intrusion through untreated crown cracks. HeatShield seals the flue interior, but it does nothing for the chimney crown. Tampa’s rainy season, which runs roughly May through October, pushes water into crown cracks, and that water runs down behind the HeatShield coating and lifts it from the flue wall. We fix this by repairing or rebuilding the crown, then treating the flue. If you skip the crown work, you’ll be redoing the HeatShield in three to five years. We’d rather tell you that before you pay for the liner repair.
- Spalling brick at the smoke chamber pushing debris into the flue. The smoke chamber sits between the firebox and the flue, and in older Tampa homes with original brick, spalling (the brick face flaking off) sends debris and dust upward into the HeatShield-coated flue. That abrasion wears the ceramic surface thin. We parge the smoke chamber with a refractory mortar before addressing the flue lining. You can’t fix a HeatShield liner problem without stabilizing what’s below it.
- Improper heat-cure on DIY or low-bid applications. HeatShield requires a controlled cure cycle to reach full hardness. When a previous contractor rushed the cure or used a cheap knockoff compound, the surface stays soft and starts to chalk or crumble within the first season of use. We’ve seen enough of these in Tampa to know the difference between product failure and application failure. When it’s an application failure, we strip and redo it. When it’s the product itself failing, we tell you that too, and we talk honestly about whether a DuraFlex liner is the better long-term repair.

Our HeatShield Chimney Repair Process
Here’s what happens when you book a HeatShield repair with us, step by step, so you know exactly what you’re paying for before we ever pick up a trowel:
- 1
Book the inspection. Call (850) 790-3475. A live person answers, 24/7. We schedule a window and send you live arrival tracking, because a four-hour wait is unreasonable.
- 2
Camera inspection of the flue. The tech runs a camera from the firebox up through the flue and sends you the footage right there. Cory Mitchell’s rule: “I’d rather show you a photo of the creosote than describe it three ways and still leave you guessing.” You see the cracks, the delamination, the joint gaps, whatever’s actually going on.
- 3
Written quote before work starts. We hand you a written price for the HeatShield repair, the prep work, and any crown or smoke chamber work. No verbal estimate, no surprise charges at the door. If the repair can safely wait, we tell you that plainly.
- 4
Prep, patch, and coat. We mechanically clean the flue, remove any failed HeatShield material, repair the underlying masonry, then apply HeatShield Cerfractory or the appropriate HeatShield system. We use OEM HeatShield products, not unbranded substitutes.
- 5
Cure and verify. We follow the manufacturer’s cure schedule, then run the camera again. You get after photos showing the finished coating, not a vague “all set.”
- 6
365-Day Done Right Promise. Every HeatShield repair comes with a written guarantee. If it fails within 365 days, we come back and make it right, free. That’s included, not an upsell.

AfterWhat HeatShield Chimney Repair Costs in Tampa
Pricing for HeatShield work in Tampa breaks down by the scope of the damage, not by how nice the house looks. Here are the ranges we quote most often:
- HeatShield Cerfractory full flue treatment: $1,500 – $3,200, depending on flue height and liner condition.
- HeatShield Joint Repair (targeted joint sealing): $800 – $1,800 for the typical single-flue chimney.
- Smoke chamber parging with HeatShield Smoke Chamber Repair System: $600 – $1,400, based on chamber size and existing masonry condition.
- Crown repair or rebuild (required before most flue work in Tampa): $400 – $1,200, and we won’t apply HeatShield over a cracked crown and pretend it’ll hold.
- Full combustion system rebuild with HeatShield: $3,000 – $6,000 for flue, smoke chamber, and firebox restoration.
What moves the price: flue height, how much old HeatShield needs removal, whether the crown or smoke chamber needs work, and whether any underlying brick repointing is required. Every quote is written, itemized, and yours to keep. Call (850) 790-3475 for a free estimate. We’ll show you the camera footage before you spend a dollar.

FAQs
No, as an independent service provider, our repairs don’t void your HeatShield warranty because we use genuine HeatShield products and follow the manufacturer’s application and cure specs. If your original HeatShield application is still under warranty, we’ll document the failure with camera footage so you can file a claim. If it’s out of warranty, which most Tampa homes we see are, we’ll give you an honest repair quote. Call (850) 790-3475 and we’ll walk you through what your warranty actually covers.
In most cases we can repair a failed HeatShield coating by removing the delaminated sections, prepping the surface, and reapplying the compound. If the flue has structural damage or the HeatShield was applied over a liner that’s now collapsing, we’ll be straight with you about whether a DuraFlex stainless liner is the safer long-term fix. Either way, you’ll see the camera footage before you decide. Call (850) 790-3475 for an inspection and we’ll show you exactly what we’re working with.
Most single-flue HeatShield repairs take one day on site, with a 24 to 48 hour cure time before the chimney is ready to use. Larger jobs involving smoke chamber parging, crown rebuilds, or brick repointing may take two to three days. We’ll give you a written timeline with the quote so you’re not left wondering when your fireplace is usable again. Call (850) 790-3475 to book.
HeatShield works in Tampa’s climate when the surrounding masonry is sound. The issue we see repeatedly is that homeowners apply HeatShield to a flue while water is still getting in through the crown, and Tampa’s rainy season undoes the work in a few years. We won’t apply HeatShield over an active leak. We fix the water entry first, then the flue. Call (850) 790-3475 for a free inspection, and we’ll show you where the water’s actually getting in.
HeatShield is a good solution for sealing minor cracks and joints in an otherwise sound clay flue, but it isn’t a structural repair. If your clay tiles are shifting, collapsing, or your flue has significant deterioration, a DuraFlex stainless liner is the more durable repair. We install both, and we’ll give you a straight recommendation based on what the camera shows. Call (850) 790-3475 and we’ll help you figure out which repair actually makes sense for your chimney.
